- Tibet is the most extensive of the three predominantly lying in the Tibetan Plateau in China and composes most of the northern and western fraction of the great Himalayan range.
- Sharing the border with Tibet in its west is Nepal with diverse geography and culture and lifestyle inspired by China and India surrounding this landlocked country in South Asia.
- Bhutan is a small Himalayan nation and is least populated of the three to the south of Tibet and enclosed on the remaining side by the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and West Bengal.
Recommended routes to take for traveling between Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan
One can start their journey from any of these three places, however, starting from Nepal is considered as most beneficial as Tibet and Bhutan both are easily accessible through flight and overland drive from here. Here are three routes to consider for the Nepal Bhutan and Tibet Tour.
Route 1: Starting from Nepal- 'The Best and Hassle-free Route
- Your route commences with a tour of Nepal and from here you can select either Bhutan or Tibet as your next destination. You will return back to Kathmandu and you can choose to Fly or drive to the next destination. We will handle your visa and permits completely if you choose this route to travel.
- Starting from Nepal is your best option because
- There are no direct flights from Tibet to Bhutan and vice versa
- Applying for the travel permits and Visa for both Tibet and Bhutan is easier from here.
- The flights to Bhutan run daily or at least 4-5 times a week in low tourist season. Tibet flight has resumed after pandemic (COVID-19) as well; 3 direct flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa (Tibet) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. - Updated April 05, 2024
- Acclimatizing is better through this route in comparison with the other two
- After completion of the tour, you can depart back home through either Bhutan or Tibet.
Route 2: Arrival in Bhutan (Fly to Nepal- flight/drive to Tibet)
- The route commences after landing in Paro, Bhutan. Paro airport is approachable from Bangkok, New Delhi, Dhaka (Bangladesh), Singapore or Kathmandu (Nepal). You can arrive here through any of the above nations after taking the availability of flights under consideration.
- After exploring the planned places and sites in Bhutan, you will either fly to Kathmandu from Paro. The flight is about an hour long and runs daily (4-5 times a week off-season). After arrival, you will visit the destinations as mentioned in the selected itinerary in Nepal.

- After exploring the planned places and sites in Tibet, you will fly to Kathmandu or drive to Kathmandu (It is also one of the best overland tours of Asia). After arrival, you will visit the destinations as mentioned in the selected itinerary in Kathmandu.
- You will fly to Bhutan and the flight takes place daily (in some selected conditions 4-5 times a week in minimum). The flight is about 75 minutes long and takes you to Paro Airport in Bhutan. You will continue the exploration and depart after the conclusion of the tour from Bhutan.
- With this route, you must manage the Chinese Visa by yourself prior to the tour from your respective nation. We will manage your Bhutan visa in advance and Nepal visa will get upon your arrival in Kathmandu (Nepal).
Documents to own Before/During the Travel
- Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
TTP is mandatory for visitors of any nation entering or exploring Tibet. You must have a valid passport and Chinese Visa to apply for this permit and it can be done only through registered tour operators (Individual unobtainable). It's best to apply 2-3 weeks before the trip for assurance of the timely arrival of TTP. - Chinese Visa
Chinese Visa is compulsory to enter any region of China or Tibet. There is no visa on arrival (VOA) service so each traveler must apply for it from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, before entering mainland China from your home. - Bhutan Visa
As the Bhutanese embassy is only present in five nations around the world, you will have to book through a registered travel agency for the visa. After the tour is booked, the agency will have the visa processed with the Bhutanese immigration department in Thimphu, Bhutan. - Nepalese visa (Visa on Arrival)
Apparently, you can pre-process for the Nepalese Visa from the Nepalese embassy from your nation or get a visa on arrival in the TIA, Kathmandu (Tribhuwan International Airport) or any land borders entering from India/China. The process is quick and easy.

Thank you for trying hard and arranging a perfect window seat on our return flight to Kathmandu. The views were simply amazing, including a breathtaking Everest, which was memorable. It was also exciting to take photos of the 2 passengers next to me.
It was a unique, memorable experience at Fishtail Lodge despite the property being a bit dated. The extensive menu, exceptional food and outstanding staff made our stay more enjoyable.
Our Tibet trip was fantastic, with friendly and exceptional guide Tashi and driver Penba. There were a few questions about tipping and re-itinerary, but the guide sorted it out smoothly.

Traveled through Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet & Laos with Asia Experiences. Words are not enough to describe the organization, especially Netra. The tour was organized seamlessly with great guides and drivers even considering the tiniest detail. All hotels were good and one hotel in Laos blew my mind. It was among the best I have ever stayed at overseas and one lunch was particularly spectacular. All included meals were excellent too. Mt. Everest (especially Tibet Base Camp), Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Kuang Si Falls, and Yamdrok Lake were my trip highlights. Thanks, Asia Experiences.

Our 3 weeks of Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka trip was outstanding. Very pleased with Netra’s smooth planning from accommodation to 5-star boutique hotels, nice and friendly guides, experienced drivers, and top-notch services. In Nepal, had a great time learning about Nepal’s recent government history as well as what life is like in the rural mountain areas. A special thanks to our friendly and experienced guide Dipak. Create some best memories in the lovely, peaceful, and nature-filled country of Bhutan with our funny, informative, and thoughtful guide Sonam. An amazing island Sri Lanka tour with visits to beautiful temples, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of wildlife was the highlight of our trip. Throughout our tour of these 3 nations, we felt safe with our guide, and while driving with drivers. Especially in Kathmandu where the driving is a little chaotic! The Most Wonderful Private Tour of Nepal/Bhutan
We were very delighted with our private tour of Nepal/Bhutan which was the most wonderful experience we ever witnessed in two amazing countries. We were unfamiliar with Netra and his company before hiring them. Netra provided us with the the utmost level of personal service in the itinerary preparation including making frequent changes due to flight cancellations. In both countries, the team and guide were amazing. They also became friends in the process- the highest compliment we could give. Throughout the trek, Netra communicated with required updates, and all the documents/tickets were delivered well in advance of departure. Our guide Dipak in Nepal made sure of all things and went way beyond the call of duty. In beautiful Bhutan our guide took us to every place on the itinerary. One lunch restaurant in Thimpu ( Cloud 9) was amazing. It was thoughtful of Netra to arrange a spiritual experience in Bhutan which was not on the itinerary. All recommended hotels were fabulous in both countries. We could not do shopping on our first day in Nepal as numerous fine stores were closed. A final day in Kathmandu was remarkable with an equally fabulous guide Rajan and able to do some shopping for exquisite artifacts that now grace our home in Mexico. Rajan went out of his way to personally wrap our goods and take them to the shipper for us. On our last night in Nepal, Netra himself took us out for a fabulous Nepalese dinner as a compliment and for our valuable feedback to improve his service. The trip which was fairly priced was worth every dollar and much more. Overall, everything was top-notch from start to end.
