Tashilhunpo Monastery is the most extensive monastery in Tibet. It lies to the west of Shigatse City on Niyama Mountain. Built in 1447AD by Gendun Drup, most of the renovation and add-ons in the Tashilhunpo Monastery were by the 4th Panchen Lama. Also one of the significant four Gelugpa monasteries in Tibet, this Monastery is an outstanding display of architecture and Tibetan art.

Translated as ‘Heap of Glory’ Tashilhunpo Monastery is also the heart of Shigatse city. The Monastery survived when the buildings of Shigatse were destroyed during the overabundance of the Chinese Revolution. Filled with history and Tibetan art, the Monastery is a delight to see during the Tibet visit.

The white walls of Tashilhunpo Monastery enclose the highest statue of Maitreya Buddha. Glided with gold the statue of Maitreya Buddha rests in the Maitreya Temple of the Monastery. Standing over 86 feet tall this statue is an example of art and devotion.
