According to legend, two merchant brothers Tapussa and Bhalika, also the first disciples of Lord Buddha, met Lord Buddha and offered him the first food after enlightenment. They received eight of Buddha’s hair and returned to Burma. They met with the local ruler King Okkalapa and made the pagoda with the strands inside it. The 344-foot stupa that we see today, however, is a result of multiple raising and reconstruction of the earlier 18-meter pagoda.
